By Shaveela Raniga The Oakland-based Clorox Company celebrated its 100th anniversary with a $10,000 grant to the East Oakland Youth Development Center, which this year is marking the 35th year that it has been serving young people in some of the most underserved and violence-plagued neighborhoods in Oakland. The joint Clorox-East Oakland Youth Development Center celebration was held Tuesday evening at the Oakland Museum. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan recognized the youth development center with a city proclamation for its 35 years of commitment to the community. Over the years Clorox has awarded the center over $5 million. East Oakland Youth Development Center serves over 300 young people weekly and approximately 2,000 annually. The center offers a wide selection of programs and resources to the community, including Pathway to College, GED, arts, wellness, and job training. According to Regina Jackson, the center’s executive officer, the center is able to continue its work because of the support of the community and corporations such as Clorox.
