UC Berkeley to Conserve Energy and Money by Replacing Lights

UC Berkeley is in the midst of a lighting project that aims to conserve energy and save money by replacing light fixtures in buildings across campus.

The initiative is a part of the Strategic Energy Plan, outlined in a 546-page report, which, in 2008, set goals for the University of California to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 2000 levels by this year and 1990 levels by 2020.

The initiative plans to replace the previously fluorescent light fixtures with more energy-efficient ones that use less wattage.

“When we’re improving infrastructure or we’re making changes to existing equipment, that helps us save energy,” said David Stone, the program manager for the Strategic Energy Partnership.

Last year, the campus completed lighting replacements for Davis Hall, Doe Library, Main Stacks, Warren Hall, Cesar Chavez Student Center and many other buildings. This year, Zellerbach Hall, Hesse Hall, O’Brien Hall and McLaughlin Hall were completed, according to Stone.

The new initiative saved Davis Hall 188,000 kilowatt-hours per year, the equivalent of $19,552 per year in savings. For Doe Library, the initiative saved 219,000 kilowatt-hours or $22,776.

Part of the lighting initiative involves the installation of controls that automatically turn on and off lights depending on when motion is detected in the room.

Stone said by the end of this year, he hopes to complete half the lighting replacements for the Oxford Facilities Unit, which houses the campus’s greenhouses.

From the research they have done on which type of lighting that plants grow best in, Stone and his team found LED lights were the best.

Along with the greenhouses, there are also plans to replace the lights in the School of Optometry this year.
