Mayor Tom Butt led dozens of young baseball and softball players last Saturday as they marched through Richmond streets in the annual 2015 Richmond Little League Opening Day Parade.

The young athletes and their families assembled for the parade at 24th Street and Nevin Avenue. Wearing their new uniforms, the teams then headed east on Macdonald Avenue before finishing their seven-block parade at the Nicholl Park Baseball Field.

As is tradition, the city’s mayor threw the ceremonial first pitch that morning before teams started their season. This year, Mayor Tom Butt, who served on the Richmond City Council for 20 years before his election as mayor, will be stepping up to the baseball mound.

“I love baseball,” said Mayor Butt. “It’s inspiring to see our next generation of young athletes get involved in sports, especially baseball and softball.”

Sponsors for this year’s Richmond Little League Baseball and Girl’s Softball include the Richmond’s Parks & Recreation Department, Richmond Fire Department, Richmond Police Activities League, the Richmond North & East Neighborhood Council, the Richmond Heights Neighborhood Council and City Councilmember Jovanka Beckles.

The Richmond Little League is a baseball and softball league for boys and girls ages 5 to 16 who live within the City of Richmond or attend a school that is located in the city. For more information, go to
