Former super middleweight world champion Andre Ward, making his full-fledged light heavyweight debut, did virtually as he pleased in a one-sided win over contender Sullivan Barrera in a world title elimination fight Saturday, March 26 at Oracle Arena in Ward’s hometown of Oakland, California.
With Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and other Bay Area sports stars at ringside among the crowd of 8,532, Ward put on a clinic against Barrera, scoring a third-round knockdown and winning a lopsided unanimous decision to pound his way toward a fall date with unified titleholder Sergey Kovalev, who watched with great interest from ringside.
All three judges scored the fight wide for Ward, 119-109, 117-109 and 117-108. ESPN.com also had it for Ward, 119-107.
“He was tough and hungry, and so was I,” said Ward, 32.
