Oakland Council to Vote on Cannabis Program to Finance Social Services, Tuesday, Sept. 27

City Council will be voting next week on updating Oakland’s local cannabis Equity Permit Program in such a way that would generate millions of dollars from the city’s marijuana industry to help fund greatly needed social services in Oakland neighborhoods.

The updates to the city’s Equity Permit Program would give the city 25 percent ownership in new local cannabis businesses and one seat on the company’s board.

The change to the permit program builds on the program’s intentions of providing reparations for Drug War victims by giving permit preferences to entrepreneurs who have spent jail time for marijuana-related offenses and to people who have lived in neighborhoods that have been hit hard by such police involvement.

The amendments will be voted on at Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee meeting at 6 p.m.
