Bumgarner, Gillaspie Send Giants to NLDS

New York, NY – There’s no better way to explain, it’s an even year. One game, one win. The Giants squeaked their way into the Wild Card just like they did two years ago. Their ace in the hole, never fails, Madison Bumgarner rose to the occasion once again.

Nine shutout innings was as perfect as you can get but the three-run homer by Conor Gillaspie was the icing on the cake. San Francisco blanked the Mets in a 3-0 win to move on the National League Division Series. Bumgarner pitched his second consecutive shutout Wild Card game.

Back in 2014, he became the third pitcher to throw a shutout with at least 10 strikes. Tonight, Bumgarner went the distance tossing nine frames allowing four hits, two walks and striking out six. New York’s bullpen kept the Giants off the board until Gillaspie connected with a pitch from Jeurys Familia.

Top of the ninth Brandon Crawford who hit his first postseason grand slam in the fourth inning during the 2014 Wild Card. Led off the frame with a double before Familia issue a free pass to Joe Panik. Gillaspie followed with his first postseason home run to cap off a night of outstanding pitching from both Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard.

Not quite the fairytale ending yet for San Francisco who will now face the Chicago Cubs. A team that finished the season with the best record in the league, with 103 wins. The series will start in Chicago on Friday at 6pm PST.
