The New McClymonds’ Committee will host its first Saturday Reading and Math School, April 15 at the West Oakland Public Library at 1801 Adeline Ave.
The Saturday School will run from 10 a.m. to noon. The second session will be held May 20.
All Oakland Public Schools elementary and middle school students are welcome to attend.
A Tuesday evening school will be added later at the request of parents. The goal is to help parents so they can help their child improve their reading, according to Ben “Coach” Tapscott, an organizer of the Saturday school.
Parents need to encourage their child to spend a certain amount of time working on his/her reading, and children need to see their parents reading, he said.
This school is free, and parents are required to stay with their child at the school. The school’s organizers are encouraging parents to bring homework and/or school assignments.
“We are asking for teachers and volunteers to assist with the students’ needs at the school,” said Tapscott. We are encouraging parents to spend one to two hours having fun with their child while learning takes place.”
The library has a children’s section where books can be checked out.
