Gayle Mackey, a long-time Oakland Unified School District employee, died on May 6. She was 65

An administrative assistant in the district for over 20 years, she worked at Elmhurst Middle School, Fremont High, Castlemont High and Ralph Bunche High schools, as well as the Truancy Center, the Compliance Office and Student Services.

She was recognized by her coworkers as a hard-working, problem-solving and committed employee and friend.

Born on Oct. 22, 1951, she grew up in Bakersfield.  She had a daughter, Erica, and was married to Wilson “Cookie” Mackey, for many years.  She and her husband were very close to her grandson, Joseph,

A service was held for her in Bakersfield on May 15.
