The Bay Area Jazz Society and the Oakland Rotary Club are providing music classes to low- income students in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), specifically at Frick Middle School.
Paul Tillman Smith, president and CEO of the Bay Area Jazz Society presented the club’s initial donation check to Dr. Bryan Alverez, music director of Frick Middle School, at this week’s school board meeting. The money will be used to purchase musical instruments including drums, clarinets, trombones, saxophones, and various other instruments for the school, located at 2845 64th Ave. in East Oakland.
“The Oakland Rotary Club is pleased to team up with the Bay Area Jazz Society to provide this funding which will give disadvantaged students, opportunities to explore the wonderful world of music,” said Merlin Edwards of the Rotary Club.
The Bay Area Jazz Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational and cultural awareness of the rich contributions of Jazz to American society. Other contributors to the Frick music project are the BuildGroup, the Pipe Fitters Union, Alten Construction/Turner Construction Group/Strategic Urban Development Alliance LLC (SUDRA), JV, UrbanCore LLC and Dr. Jowel C. Laguerre, chancellor, Peralta Community College District.
“It is very heart-warming that the Oakland-based small businesses and community-based organizations are stepping up to make sure our students have an opportunity to experience the world of music both from the artistic side as well as the production side,” said James Harris, president of the school board.
