Marin County youth, ages 12-18, are invited to participate in the county’s poster contest and create design communicating their hopes, concerns and vision – to make a poster and change the world. The art posters can inform, challenge and inspire people to take action to make a difference in their community. Recent posters have expressed concerns on current social issues such as “Black Lives Matter,” “Woman Rights are Human Rights,” and climate change. Potent messages and images can spread globally through social media.
Posters must be on poster board, any size between 16” x 24” and executed in any two-dimensional medium (oil, acrylic, markers, collages, photography, etc.) Posters may be created digitally but must be printed to the required size for submission. Artwork must be labeled on the back with the title of the poster, name of the student and their age, school or organization, hometown, telephone number, and email if applicable.
Prizes will be awarded in two age categories, 12-14 and 15-18. Winning posters showing the most originality in artistic expression and communication of the project’s theme and objectives are eligible for the following prizes:
- First Prize in each age category: $150 in art supplies to winner and $150 in art supplies to the art program of the artist’s school or organization;
- Second Prize in each age category: $100 in art supplies to winner and $100 in art supplies to the art program of the artist’s school or organization;
- Third Prize in each age category: $75 in art supplies to winner and $75 in art supplies to the art program of the artist’s school or organization;
- Honorable Mention, (2) in each age category: $50 in art supplies to winner and $50 in art supplies to the art program of the artist’s school or organization.
There is no entry fee.
The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 16. Posters must be delivered to RileyStreet Art Supply, 1138 4th St. in San Rafael, phone number (415) 457-ARTS (2787). All winning entries will be published in the Pacific Sun and will be displayed from Sept. 15 through Oct. 12 at RileyStreet Art Supply.
Artists will retain ownership of their artwork. However, the producer reserves the right to reproduce and publish any and all artwork submitted for this contest and to publish the artist’s name for promotional and marketing use. Posters may be picked up following the announcement of the contest results at RileyStreet Art Supply in San Rafael, except for the winning entries and runners-up, which will be kept for a while for public display and then returned to the entrants.
The poster contest is presented in partnership with Pacific Sun, RileyStreet Art Supply, Bank of Marin, the Rock Poster Society and Haight Street Art Center. Contest rules and details, and poster samples, can also be found on: www.youthpostercontest.com.
The contest is produced pro bono by Bruce Burtch.
