Joey Lindstrom of the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) in Wash., D.C., will discuss the proposed deep cuts to the federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) budget, and how they could affect the public.

Lindstrom will speak again at 2 pm. Rep. Jared Huffman’s staff was invited to attend the open house.

The audience is invited to speak about how affordable housing has helped them. Individual stories will also be written and sent to members of Congress.Petitions can be signed to oppose cuts to affordable housing, Social Security, Medi-Cal and Medicare.

The NLIHC is dedicated to achieving socially just public policy that assures that people with the lowest incomes in the United States have affordable and decent homes. Lindstrom is manager for Field Organizing for the NLIHC. In 2000, he worked with the National Low Income Housing Coalition while organizing Wisconsin advocates in support of the National Housing Trust Fund Campaign. He led campaigns in Madison, WI, on issues such as the local minimum wage, funding for homeless services, and eliminating housing discrimination against Housing Choice Voucher recipients.

In addition to his advocacy and campaign work, Lindstrom has also worked as a homeless outreach coordinator, tenants’ rights counselor, and workforce development professional.

The open house will be a part of Housing Week of Action called by NLIH, which takes place from July 22 to 29.

Pat Soberanis, a resident of the Maria B. Freitas Senior Community in San Rafael, will be organizing the activities for the NLIHC.  Volunteers are needed to bring snacks, work for a two-hour shift and to help translate in the following languages: Farsi (Persian), Russian and Vietnamese.
