Purple reigned at the Hayward City Hall Rotunda on Saturday, August 12 at the 50 Shades of Purple Cancer Benefit.  Presented by Sleeve Sisters, the event was MC’d by Armand Carr of KBLX, featuring live entertainment by singers Rashaad Carlton, Suga-T, Niecey LivingSingle, and gospel group, Harmony.

Event producer and founder of Sleeve Sisters Angelique Keyes said she wanted to bring awareness and raise funds for pancreatic cancer in homage to Lou G. Bonner, who succumbed to the disease in 2008. Well known in the community, Bonner worked in the food management industry at Alameda, Oakland and Washington Hospitals. Keyes, a licensed vocational nurse, said health struggles of her own with obesity, compelled her to found Sleeve Sisters, a national support group for women who choose the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure as a weight loss option.

“After going through the procedure and understanding the experience first-hand, I saw the need to form a network that offered a more private environment of support,” she said. Keyes shed 100 pounds and has kept off the weight for the past few years by eating healthy and exercising. “It’s a life choice and with the right support, you can reach your goals, prevent disease, and live the lifestyle God intended for you,” she said.

Keyes, a long-time member of Acts Full Gospel Church, has worked with the youth choir and appreciated the support of all including church members; Karen Allen, Linda Bogard and Sherry Vance, among the 80 participants and volunteers in attendance. Guests enjoyed a Chinese buffet and networking with booth vendors encouraging entrepreneurship vendors the Black Expo and Neicy LivingSingle.

Band members; Jamal Johnson, George Epps II, Cam Perridge, Corey Baugh, Marcus Phillips and Ashwultz Rodriguez kept the audience dancing. Guests joined in on the laughter with comedian Adam Carral and were inspired by leukemia survivor, Juanita Walker.

Sleeve Sisters 3rd Annual Walk 4 Life Potluck Picnic will be held Saturday, September 9 at San Leandro’s Marina Park at 14001 Monarch Bay Drive.
