In the wake of the mass shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 students and staff, West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Superintendent Matt Duffy announced last week that recently retired Richmond police Lt. Michael Booker is “joining our team” to help ensure schools are prepared for both “natural disasters and human disasters.”

Booker, who retired from RPD last December after a 27-year career, had a wide variety of public safety roles over those years, including working as a school resource officer and managing the city of Richmond’s emergency preparedness plans, according to Duffy.
“Emergency preparedness is on the minds of many based on what happened in Florida,” Duffy said at last week’s WCCUSD Board of Education meeting. “So we are really doubling down on our efforts to make sure we are as prepared as possible. We are excited to add Michael Booker. He will be joining our team over the coming weeks to help us make sure we are as prepared as we can to be prepared both for natural disasters and human disasters.”
Duffy added, “It’s something that we are taking very seriously.”
Booker was highly praised by RPD during his retirement. The department said it was “losing a highly respected and capable manager with years of experience and wisdom.”
His varied roles with RPD included street patrolling early in his career, detective work, community-oriented policing, a stint as field training officer, as a watch commander, and finished out is career managing the Youth Services Division and the Criminal Investigations Section, according to RPD.

It’s really smart of West Contra Costa to bring in a knowledgeable resource to help prepare for a potential human disaster. It’s important to include competent and experienced professionals in a school’s payroll funding when it come to preparing for potential catastrophes.Booker sounds like he will be a great addition and that people will be able to rest a little easier.
