Two Dozen Oakland Students Leave for South Africa

More than two dozen students from McClymonds High and other schools—supported by family and friends—held a bon voyage celebration Tuesday afternoon at McClymonds before the group headed for the airport to fly to South Africa.

“Today is the day—the day we’ve been anticipating and working on for so long,” said Kharyshi Wiginton, the trip’s organizer.

“We are not doing this just for us,” said Wiginton, explaining that the travelers have a responsibility to share their experiences with others after they return.

She also emphasized that the trip will be transformative. “When you come back, you will not be the same,” she said.
