Local Group Black Nova Raises Consciousness Through Music

Black Nova, an Oakland based rhythm and blues group, led by singer K.E Dorham and guitarist Ricardo Love, performs multiple genres of music including contemporary, world, blues, rap and house music. Following the murder of Philando Castile, an African-American motorist shot seven times during a traffic stop, the group felt compelled to shift their sound and their latest album “Songs in the Ley of Freedom” speaks to that truth.

“The Philando Castile murder changed the trajectory of our music. Up to that time we’d done a lot of really good music, but we started feeling irresponsible by not addressing social issues,” said Dorham, who has experienced his own level of trauma.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Dorham attendex Prairie View College before moving to Houston, where he recorded his first album. His producer was later killed by a drunk driver and it forced Dorham’s move to California, where he would eventually meet Love.

A native Kalamazoo Michigan, once signed with Polygraph Records before working as an independent music producer. He has spent the last thirty years between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, and has produced many East Bay artists including La Toya London.

With a guitar sound ranging from Santana to Hendricks, Love is a jazz mainstay in the Bay Area music community. Since joining forces, Black Nova has produced three albums since 2014.

“We’ve made so much music it doesn’t make sense not to get out and perform so that’s what we’ll be doing the next couple of weeks,” said Love.

Black Nova will perform Friday, July 20 at the Malonga Casquelourd Center’s open house locatwd at 1428 Alice St at 4:00 p.m; Stockton’s Soul Food Festival at 5 p.m. at 221 Center Street Weber Point on August 4th; and “Black August” at 4:00 p.m. at the East Oakland Youth Center located at 8200 International Avenue on August 11.
