Jovanka Beckles, candidate for the State Assembly District 15, is heading into the November run-off with endorsements of a number of her rivals in the June primary.
Beckles, a member of the Richmond City Council, edged out 10 other candidates in the June primary in a district that includes Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville and parts of Oakland.
Over the last few weeks, she has received the backing of Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb, who came in third in the primary; Berkeley Board of Education member Judy Appel, El Cerrito Vice Mayor Rochelle Pardue-Okimoto, East Bay MUD Director Andy Katz, Cheryl Sudduth-Política and Owen Poindexter.
In a prepared statement Councilmember Kalb said, “I am confident that Jovanka Beckles will be a strong advocate and policymaker in Sacramento to preserve, protect and enhance our East Bay environment and accelerate California’s transition to renewable and sustainable energy paths that will mitigate global climate change.
“I’m also thankful for her support of our shared commitment to stop coal in the East Bay and throughout our state, and to protect our natural environment for generations to come.”
Her endorsements include: United Teachers of Richmond, SEIU-CA, California Nurses Association, the LAMBDA Democratic Club of Contra Costa County, the Sierra Club, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) Action, the California Teachers Association and Our Revolution.
Beckles has worked for decades as a counselor for underserved youth. She attended Florida A&M on a full basketball scholarship, graduating cum laude. Born in Panama City, Panama, she immigrated to the U.S. with her parents in 1972.
Beckles’ opponent, Buffy Wicks, came in first in the primary, far outspending the rest of the candidates.
