Oakland’s state representatives held a press conference Thursday to praise a new law (AB 1840) that was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown to provide financial relief to the Oakland Unified School District.

The law, cheered by Assemblymembers Rob Bonta and Tony Thurmond, as well as Senator Nancy Skinner – would allow representatives of the state to force the district to close schools, sell school property over the next few years and make cuts and layoffs at school sites.

Also attending the press conference were school board members and the superintendent. No Oakland parents, students, teachers or community representatives spoke at the event.

For many Oakland residents, the new law is reminiscent of the efforts of Former State Senator Don Perata and the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) to sell public school property to private developers during the six years of state trusteeship.
Meanwhile, the school district closed its books on the 2017-18 school year last week, surprisingly reporting that it had no deficit but was over $29 million in the black.

The Oakland Post will cover the full story next week.
