Oakland, CA – A spectacular ending for the Raiders who got their first win of the season. Oakland beat former head coach Hue Jackson and the Cleveland Browns in overtime 45-42.
The Raiders scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and kicked the final field goal in overtime to overcome an 0-3 start. It’s been very challenging for Oakland to score in the final quarter and today they overcame those hurdles to claim victory.
Mike McCrane kicked the game winning field goal but it was the comeback rally in that fourth the shocked RaiderNation. Unable to put points on the board late in the fourth quarter has been frustrating for Oakland but today was different.
“It was tough these past three weeks,” said Bruce Irvin. “We’ve faced adversity once again. Guys made a decision to either back down or keep fighting, we kept fighting. We got a couple of big stops and got the ball back to the offense and they made it do what it do.”
After Nick Chubb recorded his second touchdown with a 41-yard run, the Browns extended their lead 42-34. With less than a minute on the clock, Derek Carr kept pace and drove his offense downfield to set up Jared Cook’s 7-yard touchdown pass. Oakland followed with a two-point conversion to tie the game 42-42.
In the final seconds of regulation Mayfield went deep with a pass intended for Antonio Callaway but Reggie Nelson was the go-to guy who caught Mayfield’s pass to end the fourth before heading into overtime. The Raiders can use this win for motivation moving forward. After a slow start Oakland kept their focus and gave the sellout crowd their moneys worth.
It feels like my first win in 100 years,” Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said. “It’s great to be back. I thank our fans for hanging in there with us. There were a lot of ups and downs, but to get that (game-winning) field goal from our third-string kicker and our backup long snapper. I’ve never been so nervous on a 29-yard field goal in my life.”
In Mayfield’s first NFL start, the rookie looked promising despite two interceptions and two fumbles. He went 21-of-41 for 295 yards and two touchdowns. His first turnover came in the first quarter. Mayfield’s pass was intended for Calloway but intercepted by Gareon Conley who rushed it back for a 36-yard touchdown to make it a 7-0 game.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson talks about the loss and turnovers by Mayfield:
Cleveland then scored three times in the second quarter. Nick Chubb rushed for a 63-yard touchdown untouched by any Oakland defenders. Mayfield found Darren Fells for a 49-yard touchdown pass. The Browns multiple attempts at the two-point conversion seemed a bit presumptuous so early in the game. It didn’t matter because Carr and his offense stayed on the field just as long as Cleveland.
“You continue to raise the bar with Carr,” said Gruden. “It’s not good enough yet. He has spectacular talent. He’s a great kid. He’s going to be fine in this offense. We keep raising the bar with him and try not to ever get satisfied. He hung in there and played his best when we needed him the most.”
Carr finished with 35-of-58 for 437 yards. He threw two interceptions and four touchdowns. Carr’s second turnover proved costly. He went deep to Martavis Bryant and Damarious Randall made a leaping catch for the interception. Mayfield connected with Jarvis Landry for the 2-yard touchdown making it a 28-14 game. Carr leads the NFL with 7 interceptions.
Carr’s four touchdowns ties for second in franchise history with Ken Stabler for most games with four or more passing touchdowns (six). The Raiders had two 100-yard receivers, one 100-yard rusher and one 400-yard passer for the first tie in franchise history. Marshawn Lynch recorded his 34th career 100-yard rushing game since Nov 9th 2014. Lynch rushed for 130 yards on 20 carries today.
“We haven’t fixed anything yet,” explained Gruden. “We have a lot of things we have to get better at. I think it is pretty obvious, we played some good football for stints. We played good football in Miami. We played some good football against the Rams. We had some really good tape against Denver.
But we have tape that needs to be fixed. That’s the same thing that I think we will see today. We have some guys that are really eager to work, we have good leadership and we going to continue to do it. It was really fun to score and win a game and to get that monkey off our back.”
